On the 25th of November 2023, a workshop ‘Train the Tainer’ was held at Integrated Indian School which was conducted by Mrs. Yvonne Van Zyl an exemplary with a profound reservoir of experience and academic prowess. With over 35 years of dedicated service in the realm of language education, her background shines with academic excellence, holding an MBA from the University of Edinburgh and a Master’s degree from the University of Liverpool.The workshop, a pinnacle of professional development in the field of education, aimed to equip educators with advanced pedagogical tools and innovative methodologies to elevate their teaching proficiency.
Throughout the workshop, educators from diverse backgrounds and expertise levels converged to explore cutting-edge techniques in instructional design, effective communication, classroom management, and the art of fostering an interactive and inclusive learning environment.
The presentation showcased a comprehensive approach to English language teaching, integrating innovative methodologies and emphasizing crucial aspects of inclusive education. The session commenced with an engaging icebreaker, setting the tone for an interactive and participatory learning experience. Throughout the session, several key themes were highlighted like the significance of teaching grammar in an enjoyable manner, emphasizing the role of inclusion and fostering two-way communication within the classroom. Strategies were discussed to make grammar learning engaging and accessible to all learners.The session underscored the effectiveness of gamification and interactive activities in enhancing language acquisition, making learning both enjoyable and effective.Underlining the importance of student autonomy, the presentation advocated for returning control to students, enabling them to take ownership of their learning process, fostering independence and self-motivation. The role of teamwork in the classroom was also emphasized, elucidating how collaborative activities can enhance learning outcomes and interpersonal skills among students.The importance of honing listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills was discussed in detail, with a focus on how the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) can support students intending to pursue further studies. The sessionalso shed light on utilizing vocabulary effectively to exhibit mastery of the English language, elucidating strategies to expand and apply vocabulary in various contexts. The significance of storytelling was highlighted as an effective tool for improving speaking skills, offering insights into its role in language development and communication.The presentation concluded by emphasizing the importance of continuous language development, and fostering a holistic approach towards language acquisition.
At the end of the session the Principal Mrs. Ritu Mathur and Vice Principal Mrs. Husena Khedawala extended their heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Yvonne Van Zyl for the language teaching training workshop thus urging educators to embrace these multifaceted strategies for an enriched learning experience.
